You Don’t Need the “Right” Outfit to Practise Yoga
Claire Martin Luxton | JUN 26
Ever found yourself thinking, “I’ll do some yoga when I’ve got the time… when I’ve got the space… when I’m wearing something suitable…”?
You're not the only one. We often get caught up in the idea that we need the “perfect” set-up before we can practise; a clear space, the right clothes, a peaceful mood, an uninterrupted hour. But here's the truth — none of that is essential.
Your practice can fit around you
You don’t need to wear yoga leggings.
You don’t need to be barefoot, on a mat, with candles flickering around you.
You don’t need to be particularly calm or already have a certain level of flexibility before you begin.
What matters is simply this:
Can you move a little? Can you sit comfortably? Can you breathe?
If the answer is yes — you can practise.
And if your clothes feel restrictive? Adjust the movement. Make it smaller, slower, gentler. Your practice should serve you, not the other way around.
Let go of the “shoulds”
We carry so many ideas about what self-care should look like. We may think it needs to be long, quiet or graceful. We may think we should be more flexible, focused or disciplined. But self-care — real self-care — is messy, real, and beautifully human. It’s about listening, showing up as you are, and meeting yourself with compassion; even when life feels chaotic.
Just show up — that’s enough
Your yoga or meditation practice doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to be. Show up in your pyjamas. Show up with tired eyes. Show up for five minutes between meetings or while the kettle boils.
This is your time.
Just for you.
And you deserve that.
